What is a dental filling?
A dental filling is a restoration that is used to repair a tooth that has decay. The tooth decay is removed and then filling material is used to fill the area and restore the tooth’s normal shape and function.
Do I need a dental filling?
Our doctors can decide whether or not you need a dental filling in Spearfish, South Dakota, through a visual exam. Discolored spots on the teeth can indicate cavities. X-rays, and other diagnostic tools may also be used.
How is a dental filling placed?
When you come to our office, our doctors may numb the area before removing the decayed portion of the tooth. Once all of the decay and debris has been removed, the area will be shaped to prepare it for the dental filling material. If a composite material is being used, the filling is placed in layers. As each layer is placed, it will be cured with a special light. After all of the layers are in place and cured, the filling will be shaped and polished.
