Your routine dental checkup at Dr. Michael Dana’s clinic is designed to clean your teeth, and detect signs of gum disease, cavities, and oral cancer. If a cavity develops on one of your teeth between checkups, in time, the area of tooth decay can become so large that Dr. Dana can’t viably repair the tooth with a standard dental filling.

In a situation like this he might recommend treating the tooth with a dental crown. This will completely replace the tooth enamel with an alternate dental material.

The treatment process starts with the doctor numbing the tooth before using a drill to remove the tooth enamel and decayed material . Dr. Dana will then create an impression of the affected tooth and the teeth surrounding it. The impression will be sent to a dental lab where highly trained technicians will create your new dental crown.

Dr. Dana will secure a temporary crown over the abutment. While this won’t restore the full function of the tooth it will protect the tooth while the dental lab does its work.

When your dental crown is ready Dr. Dana will cement it in place with a strong dental adhesive.

If you have a cavity on one of your teeth and you live in the Spearfish, South Dakota, area, you should call 605.642.7727 to seek treatment at Dana Dental Arts.
